Man found dead in tent near Peabody Creek

Sister had reported him missing

PORT ANGELES — A 74-year-old man was found deceased in a tent in the 700 block of East Seventh Street on Wednesday afternoon, said Port Angeles Police Sgt. Kevin Miller on Friday.

Deputy Coroner Nathan Millett said on Friday that William Survilo, a former California resident, appeared to die of natural causes.

There were no obvious signs of trauma, an on-site drug screen was negative and his sister said he had both a stent and nitroglycerin pills due to a heart condition, he said.

No autopsy is planned, Millett said.

Millett said the man was reported missing by his sister in California on Wednesday. She asked them to look for him because the two hadn’t spoken in a couple of days, he said.

Upon checking files, it was found that Survilo last was reported living in a tent along Peabody Creek, Millett said. So an officer checked the area and found the man deceased in a tent in which he had been living, he said.

A vehicle makes its way across the Elwha River Bridge west of Port Angeles on Friday morning as a plume of wildfire smoke filters down the river valley. The smoke, which originated from seven named wildfires near the center of Olympic National Park, settled through the Elwha drainage to lower elevations, creating hazardous air in lower portions of the valley and unhealthy conditions in surrounding areas.
