Clallam and Jefferson county law enforcement agencies plan extra patrols to stop drivers impaired by alcohol or drug use.
Extra officers will be on duty throughout a two-week period beginning Saturday and continuing until Sept. 1.
“Our aim is to make the roads safer for everyone,” said Linda Pfafman, traffic task force coordinator for Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Impaired drivers, who are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol “are the number one cause of fatalities in the U.S. and in Washington state,” she added.
The time around the Labor Day holiday is high risk, said Jim Borte, director of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Department DUI Task Force, “because there are so many more people who do these things during the summer months.”
