Last-ditch attempt to bring Kalakala back to Port Angeles?

PORT ANGELES — Local supporters of the art-deco ferry Kalakala, which once called Port Angeles home, are floating a new idea to bring the ailing vessel back.

Robert Harrison envisions the historical, silvery ferry as a dinner cruise ship and casino, carrying passengers from Port Angeles and Victoria to the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and back as they gamble, dine on five-star food and enjoy the view.

Harrison, of Port Angeles, has shared his idea with Joyce resident Eugene Voight, who is keeping his $10,000 of seed money on the table, provided someone comes up with a solid plan to bring the Kalakala here.

The small showing of support comes as the 276-foot Kalakala, now moored in Seattle’s Lake Union, is being evicted from its moorage and needs $750,000 for external restoration.
