LaPush: Quileute to get $649,322 grant for housing improvements

LAPUSH — The Quileute Housing Authority will receive a $649,322 federal grant to improve affordable housing.

The funding falls under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Indian Housing Block Grant Program.

“The funding from HUD’s Office of Native American Programs will enable us to continue with our existing programs, which include providing home repair and maintenance services to low-income residents at a reduced rate, facilitating financial literacy training, operating a community youth center and maintaining the stock of rental housing units,” said Audrey Grafstrom, housing authority executive director.

In addition, the HUD housing units will be upgraded with the construction of covered carports, since none of the 74 units was built with either garages or carports, Grafstrom said.

Quileute Housing Authority also has funds earmarked for construction of a new daycare center in LaPush.

The project is awaiting additional funding through the tribe so that it can be constructed as a joint daycare/head-start facility, Grafstrom said.
