SEQUIM — The Gull gas station at 104 E. Washington St. in downtown Sequim will shut down by the end of the month and most likely won’t be a gas station anymore.
Larry Hitchcock, executive vice president of Gull Industries, which owns the station, said the target closing date is Sept. 1, although it could shut down by as much as a week earlier.
“The store requires some improvements that aren’t justified by the return,” he said, noting that the property is too small to add a convenience store, which would boost revenue.
“You can only sell gasoline because of the size, and there’s just not enough profit in gasoline these days,” Hitchcock said.
That’s true even with retail gas prices setting record highs, he said.
Property’s future unclear
What happens to the property next isn’t clear.
“Probably, the gas dispensing equipment, including the underground storage tanks, will be removed” within a reasonable time after the station closes, Hitchcock said.
He said he’s not sure if the property will be redeveloped, or what would be put there if it is.
