JOYCE — State Patrol investigators Wednesday were trying to sort out the cause of a spectacular head-on collision of log trucks which killed a Forks man and injured a rural Port Angeles resident the day before.
Loren R. Pearson, 49, who was driving a loaded log truck on state Highway 112 about four miles east of Forks, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Alvin O. Bertelson, 53, the driver of the other log truck, which was unloaded, was listed Wednesday night in satisfactory condition by a nursing supervisor at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
State Patrol spokesman Glen Tyrrell said a preliminary investigation shows Bertelson’s rig, which was westbound, swerved to avoid two cars stopped in the road and collided with the eastbound log truck.
“One of the vehicles in the middle of the roadway was making a left turn into a driveway, and the other vehicle was behind it,” Tyrrell said.
“The drivers are known, and we will be contacting them soon if we haven’t already.”
