Jefferson: County’s Democrats pick delegates to state convention on Saturday

CHIMACUM — Jefferson County Democrats converge on the Chimacum High School auditorium to vote on delegates to send to the state convention in June.

The county convention starts at 9 a.m. Saturday.

All Democrats are encouraged to attend, but only delegates elected at the February caucuses will be allowed to vote at the convention, Party Chairman Bill Biery said Thursday.

The purpose of the convention is to nominate a Democratic candidate for president and to make suggestions for changes to the party’s platform.

There are 19 resolutions proposed by county Democrats to consider at Saturday’s convention, Biery said.

Conventions are held every two years, but the ones held during presidential election years are particularly well-attended, he said.

“It should be a really successful event,” he said. “There’s a tremendous amount of interest in the election process this year.

“Particularly, I notice a lot more involvement with younger people this year.”
