PORT TOWNSEND — Firefighters, police officers and regular citizens gathered Sunday to observe the fourth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks at the place where local volunteers rally to respond to emergencies — the historic Fire Bell Tower.
“We are meeting at this historic site to recognize the spirit of volunteers and the spirit of dedication to their fellow men,” Mike Mingee said.
Mingee, chief of East Jefferson Fire and Rescue, organized this year’s 9/11 memorial, held at the foot of the bell tower overlooking Port Townsend Bay.
The 30-minute ceremony drew about 50 people, many police or fire department uniforms, to remember the people killed in the attack, including those who died responding to the call.
“I felt it was important to do something,” Mingee said.
Karl Barden, Jefferson County Public Safety chaplain, recited a prayer following a moment of silence.
