Inattention cited as cause of Tuesday fatal collision south of Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — Inattention was believed to be the cause of a head-on collision Tuesday night that killed a 56-year-old Port Hadlock man and seriously injured his wife, authorities said Wednesday.

Cadian Colbert Hendricks was killed in the foggy 8:20 p.m. crash when the 1987 Dodge Dakota pickup truck he was driving southbound on state Highway 20 just north of the state Highway 19 junction crossed the centerline.

The Dodge Dakota struck an oncoming 2005 Chevrolet truck driven by John Campbell Mike Hogan, 42, of Westport, the Washington State Patrol reported.

Highway 20 and part of Highway 19 were closed in both directions for 2½ hours, troopers said.

The passenger in Hendricks’ vehicle, Sylvia Jo Despain Hendricks, 55, sustained head trauma in the crash, according to the State Patrol.

She was taken by ambulance to Jefferson Healthcare hospital in Port Townsend, then to an undisclosed intensive care unit because the nighttime fog hampered a helicopter airlift at the crash scene, officials said.

Her condition Wednesday was unknown.

Hogan, who sustained a left-foot injury, bruises and scrapes, was treated at Jefferson Healthcare and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Kyle Zimmerman, co-owner of The Hub at Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles, adds a new coat of paint on Wednesday to an advertising sign on the back of his building that was uncovered during the demolition of a derelict building that once hid the sign from view. Zimmerman said The Hub, formerly Mathews Glass and Howe's Garage before that, is being converted to an artist's workspace and entertainment venue with an opening set for late May or early June. Although The Hub will have no control over any new construction that might later hide the automotive signs, Zimmerman said restoring the paint is an interesting addition to the downtown area for as long as it lasts.
