In Olympia, graving yard discussion yet to come before state Transportation Commission

OLYMPIA — The abandoned graving yard project in Port Angeles didn’t come up during Day 1 of the state Transportation Commission’s meeting Tuesday.

But Commissioner Dan O’Neal of Mason County said afterward that the $58 million subject is sure to come up today.

Transportation Secretary Doug MacDonald is scheduled to report to the seven-member statewide commission beginning at 1 p.m.

The commission meets in the Transportation Building, Room 1D2, at 310 Maple Park Ave. SE, Olympia.

The two-day meeting is the first since MacDonald and former Gov. Gary Locke announced that the state was abandoning the Hood Canal Bridge graving yard project.

Legislative hearings urged

Elsewhere on the Capitol Campus in Olympia, the 24th District’s three legislators have called for hearings into events surrounding the Transportation Department’s action, announced Dec. 21.

They also are trying to arrange meetings between the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe and newly inaugurated Gov. Christine Gregoire.
