PORT ANGELES –Almost a year after graving yard construction halted in Port Angeles, work has started in Tacoma to build concrete pontoons for the Hood Canal Bridge.
Still to be decided is where concrete anchors for the project will be built, with Port Angeles remaining in the running.
In contrast to the ballyhoo that accompanied the state’s ill-fated 2002 choice of Port Angeles for the graving yard, work began without fanfare at Concrete Technology Corp. in Tacoma.
“We are working on pontoon construction at Concrete Tech,” Linda Mullen, spokesperson for the state Department of Transportation, said Wednesday.
A change to the state’s agreement with Kiewit-General of Poulsbo, contractor for the bridge repairs, was signed in October.
Awaiting election results
Department of Transportation officials withheld an announcement while they awaited election results on the gas tax repeal Initiative 912, which might have doomed the project anew.
The proposed gas tax repeal was defeated during the Nov. 8 general election.
