Four-year sentence in case with 60 pounds of marijuana, firearms

PORT ANGELES — A former Sequim man was sentenced last week to more than four years in prison after he was convicted of illegally possessing 60 pounds of marijuana and firearms, which he kept in a room he rented from a Sequim woman who alerted authorities.

Colin M. McCurdy, 27, who used the aliases Miles Tritter and Augustus M. McValley, was sentenced by Clallam County Superior Court Judge S. Brooke Taylor to 51 months after a jury found him guilty of possessing marijuana — which police said was valued at $250,000 — and two firearms.

After his landlady denied him an extension on his rent at a River Road address, she discovered six garbage bags of marijuana and firearms March 29 in his room and called law enforcement, according to court records.

Clallam County Sheriff’s Office deputies who obtained a search warrant discovered paperwork in the room with McCurdy’s name.

They also discovered a Springfield Armory Model 1903 rifle, a .50-caliber muzzle loader and eight 20-gauge shotgun shells.

McCurdy had prior convictions for assault, drugs and stolen property, making him ineligible to possess firearms, county Deputy Prosecutor John Troberg said.

“The landlady was particularly courageous in calling law enforcement with her discovery,” Troberg said.

Troberg said the amount of marijuana made it likely McCurdy was acting as a courier for an organization.

McCurdy had been convicted of felony possession of stolen property in Snohomish County and had a firearms conviction in Canada, both under his Augustus McValley alias, Troberg said Friday.

At the time he was charged in April 2011, McCurdy was serving time in north-central Oregon on felony charges of attempting to elude authorities and vehicle theft.
