PORT TOWNSEND — Plans for Fort Worden State Park’s 100th birthday next year include celebrations in May, July, October and December.
Centennial coordinator Perry Spring talked about the celebrations at Monday’s Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
“The legacy of the Fort Worden 2002 Centennial will be beneficial to this area’s economy, our community’s sense of place as well as our cultural, historical and natural resources,” Spring said.
He outlined the celebrations which last from three to 10 days based on the theme, “Come Home to Fort Worden.”
A celebration of the fort’s inception and history will take place May 10 through May 19, marking 100 years from the date soldiers first inhabited the historic fort in May 14, 1902. Although construction began in the 1890s, the fort wasn’t occupied by the U.S. Army until then.
