FORKS — A publishing company plans to appeal nearly $900 in charges from the Forks post office for the distribution of telephone books to mailboxes by Crescent High School students.
The company, Vernon Publishing of Woodinville, had contracted for several years with students from the Joyce-area school without incident.
Students earn money for school activities by delivering the telephone books.
Gene Walters, co-owner of Vernon Publishing, confirmed last week that he received a letter from Forks Postmaster Nicholas C. Julich saying the telephone books were found hanging in plastic bags off mailboxes May 18-19.
Federal law prohibits use of mailboxes for anything but reception of postage-paid mail.
Julich wants Vernon Publishing to pay $868.46 for 502 phone books.
