Forks man dies after tree falls at logging site

CLALLAM BAY — A 33-year-old Forks man died after he was struck by a falling tree at a logging site south of Clallam Bay, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said.

Tyler D. Ness was working at a job site Wednesday morning on timberland about 8 1/2 miles into a remote forested area accessed by a primitive road near milepost 20 on state Highway 112 when the tree fell, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The site supervisor called 911 at about 8:44 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office said.

Clallam Fire District 5 responded as the lead emergency agency, with support from Clallam Fire District 1, Quileute Fish and Wildlife Enforcement and the Sheriff’s Office.

First responders, who worked in coordination with the logging crew, extricated Ness from a steep embankment at the site. Ness was transported by ambulance to a waiting Life Flight helicopter, the Sheriff’s Office said.

During air transport, Ness suffered cardiac arrest, prompting an immediate reroute to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles. Despite continuous CPR and an additional 30 minutes of advanced life-saving efforts when they arrived at the hospital, Ness was pronounced deceased at about 12:14 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office was continuing an investigation on Thursday.
