First Federal selects Indiana man as new president/CEO

PORT ANGELES — Levon Mathews of Lafayette, Ind., has been appointed president and chief executive officer of First Federal, the Port Angeles-based financial institution announced on Monday.

Mathews will succeed outgoing president and CEO Karen McCormick on Sept. 28.

McCormick, who has served as president and CEO of First Federal — which has branches in Sequim, Port Townsend and Forks — since 1997 and has worked there for 32 years, will help train her successor in October and November before she retires.

Mathews, 50, has a 26-year banking career with Lafayette National Bank. He took on expanded responsibilities in a series of mergers.

He recently served as executive vice president and director of private banking for Regions Financial Corp., a $144 billion financial holding company based in Birmingham, Ala.

Mathews, who holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from Butler University of Indianapolis, is a former board member of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

“Levon is an accomplished leaded, with a proven track record of success in creating value for the customers and communities he has served,” said McCormick, who announced her retirement in January.

Mathews was First Federal’s top choice from a list about 30 candidates the bank seriously considered, she said.

He accepted the offer about three weeks ago.

“The process was so thorough that when Levon accepted our offer to take this position, we knew we had it right,” said First Federal board member Dave Blake.
