Fire destroys shop, damages garage in Agnew

AGNEW — A brush and structure fire destroyed a shop and its contents and damaged a garage on Percival Road in Agnew on Thursday.

The fire was determined to be accidental, firefighters said.

Clallam County Fire District 3 firefighters were dispatched at 3:54 p.m. to a report of a brush fire in the 100 block of Carlsborg Road, but the location was incorrect, according to the fire department.

“The initial caller was unfamiliar with the area and gave multiple incorrect locations,” according to a press release. “Dispatchers were able to get information from additional callers and update crew that the fire involved a vehicle, a structure and a field fire on Percival Road in Agnew.”

Firefighters arrived to find a shop with a lean-to fully involved in flames and a pickup fully ablaze under the lean-to while a neighboring garage had fire on the exterior of the north side with smoke coming from the eves.

A house on the property was not involved, firefighters said.

Firefighters were successful in keeping the garage fire from spreading to the home by focusing efforts there, the fire department said. The shop blaze was suppressed as water supply allowed but not at the expense of the garage fire.

The vegetation fire was limited by the fact that it had been recently mowed and little effort was need to contain the grass fire, the department said.

DNR units were requested. The fire was controlled at 5:47 p.m., and the last unit cleared at 10:27 p.m.

The owners were out of town. A house sitter was home at the time. There was also an adult male present who was at the property to mow the grass.

The shop and its contents, including several vehicles and pieces of equipment, were considered to be a total loss, firefighters said. The garage sustained fire damage to the north half and rafter space. All of the contents of the garage, including a vehicle, were smoke damaged.

Fire crews included three engines, two water tenders, two medic units, a chief and 20 firefighters and support personnel from Fire District No. 3; an engine and water tender from Fire District No. 2; an engine from Port Angeles Fire Department and an ambulance from Clallam County Fire District 3.

Olympic Ambulance assisted Fire District No. 3 through mutual aid. And while the fire was fought, a two-person crew from the Diamond Point Station, an assistant chief, two Olympic Ambulance units and a medic unit from Port Townsend responded to multiple medical calls in the Sequim area.
