PORT ANGELES — Months have passed since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, but a lot of work still needs to be done.
That’s the message the McCrorie family of Port Angeles were given to take home after spending Christmas vacation in New Orleans, volunteering in relief efforts.
“It’s just a little part, it’s just a little piece,” John McCrorie said of the work he and his family did while in Louisiana.
McCrorie, 47, and his wife Sherrie, 45, decided to head down to the Gulf Coast for Christmas with their two daughters, Tayler, 19, and Kelsey, 16.
The family joined others from Georgia, Tennessee, Kansas and Canada to help the people of a New Orleans’ suburb in tearing down houses, cleaning out debris from yards and serving a huge Christmas dinner of jambalaya and gumbo stew to hundreds of displaced families.
“We needed to serve instead of being served,” John said.
