EYE ON THE PENINSULA: Counties to view reservoir project, public health services contract

Government meetings across the North Olympic Peninsula

The boards of local government agencies will meet next week on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Clallam County

The three Clallam County commissioners will consider an agreement to extend the contract with the state Department of Ecology for land acquisition, design, permitting, water rights work, outreach and project management activities for the Dungeness off-channel reservoir project through Jan. 31, 2025 when they meet Tuesday.

On Monday, commissioners will review the 2025 and 2026 timber sales with Department of Natural Resources staff in their weekly work session.

The commissioners’ work session, at 9 a.m. Monday, will preview items set for action at their formal meeting, which starts at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

• A call for a public hearing at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, regarding a proposed ordinance establishing an employment contract for Todd Mielke as county administrator.

• Several budget items: revisions, reductions, supplemental appropriations and a public hearing regarding the use of funds from an unfilled long range planning position to upgrade and stabilize the Streamkeeper database.

• The formal introduction of two new representatives of Olympic National Forest: Susan Beall, deputy forest supervisor and Krystle Schnepf, executive assistant.

• A three-year lease agreement with Straitside Ranch to allow them to graze cattle at Robin Hill Farm County Park.

• A grant agreement with the state Military Department for $97,500 to continue to assist the U.S. Border Patrol with Operation Stonegarden.

• An agreement with the state Department of Agriculture for $60,000 to eradicate knotweed through June 30, 2025.

• An agreement with Commerce for $62,230 for the 2024 Victim/Witness Assistance Grant.

• An agreement with San Juan County to provide juvenile detention facilities for them at a rate of $130 per day per juvenile and an additional $100 per day per juvenile requiring court-ordered mental health or substance abuse services.

• A call for bids for the lower Dungeness River levee surfacing project; bids will be opened at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15.

• A call for bids for the downtown Sekiu sewer main replacement project; bids will be opened at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15.

• An update on the Olympic Peninsula tourism master plan from Debbie Wardrop.

• A discussion as to which county commissioner should represent Clallam County on the RECOMPETE Task Force.

• An agreement with Hoch Construction, Inc. for $201,725 for the courthouse landscaping project.

• Discussion regarding a request from the Serenity House to allow Sharon Maggard to represent Clallam County homelessness issues and vote for the county at the Washington State Balance of State – Continuum of Care Board.

• An agreement with Haase Woodworks, Inc. for $76,780 for interior renovation of the auditor’s office.

• An agreement with the Department of Ecology for $162,058 in funding to support the Sheriff’s Office CREW removal of litter and illegally dumped materials from public lands.

• A request to waive the three bid requirement and purchase 1,110 square feet of flooring for Heath and Human Services’ Forks office from Burton Flooring for $9,491.51.

• A request to waive the three bid requirement and purchase 65 linear feet of chain link fencing for the Harm Reduction Center at 325½ Second St. from Rainbow Sweepers for $5,440.

The three Jefferson County commissioners will consider approving an amendment in a state Department of Health contract for public health services when they meet at 9 .m. Monday.

The item, which adds an additional $1,758,658 to a contract for a total of $6,166,503, is in the consent agenda.

The regular agenda notes commissioners will discuss board and committee vacancies.
