PORT ANGELES — City Councilwoman Lauren Erickson, who was elected to a second term in 2003, will resign from the City Council effective May 31.
In a statement to Mayor Karen Rogers on Tuesday, Erickson cited unspecified health issues and increasing professional obligations for her resignation.
She is a deputy prosecuting attorney for Clallam County.
Erickson was absent from Tuesday’s City Council meeting and could not be reached for comment.
“Being a council member requires a tremendous time commitment and energy that I am not able to currently give,” she wrote in her statement to Rogers.
“It is in the best interests of the community and the council to have council members who can provide this type of contribution.”
She ran unopposed in 1999, replacing Gary Braun, who had been forced from office by term limits.
She was re-elected in 2003, easily defeating online publisher Peter Ripley.
Rogers said the council has 90 days to fill the vacancy, but hopes to do it sooner.
