Dream Playground to be closed next week; volunteers sought for work party

PORT ANGELES — The Dream Playground at Erickson Park will be closed Friday through Sunday, Sept. 7, for annual maintenance, and volunteers are being sought to do the work.

Some 20 to 30 volunteers will rake, clean up, repair the fence, paint and seal from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. They can come for as little as an hour or for the whole time.

On Saturday, work on the playground at Third and Race streets in Port Angeles will be among the Day of Caring projects sponsored by the United Way of Clallam County.

The Dream Playground Foundation is organizing the annual repair and cleanup.

Each year, the foundation prioritizes the repairs the playground needs most and puts together a work party to tackle them, said Steve Methner, board member.

Volunteers this year will pull ground cover back from the fence for inspection and repair, as well as seal a few wooden elements in the structure, touch up the paint in play areas and clean up.

What to bring

Gloves, rakes and paintbrushes should be brought. Those comfortable with light carpentry can bring power drill drivers.

Sawhorses, a power miter saw and router may also be needed.

The foundation will provide Port Angeles High School students who volunteer with documentation of community service hours.

Most students need such hours toward graduation requirements, and many use them as part of their resume for college or employment applications.

The Dream Playground was built over five days in September 2002 by more than 2,000 volunteers, with more than $185,000 in donations, nearly all from local businesses and individuals.
