OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Alternating single-lane traffic could begin as early as Monday at La Poel Creek on U.S. Highway 101 at Lake Crescent for the installation of a culvert.
Strider Construction will set up traffic control devices and signage that day in preparation for the installation, said Penny Wagner, Olympic National Park spokesperson, in a press release on Thursday.
The culvert installation is needed to protect the road after a winter storm in January caused La Poel Creek to occupy a new channel and flow over the highway, Wagner said.
The work is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 31.
Drivers should plan for delays for alternating single-lane traffic in the area of milepost 223.5 near the entrance to the La Poel Picnic Area, Wagner added.
La Poel Picnic Area will close early this season due to the culvert installation.
Flaggers will control traffic in the work zone during work hours. Traffic signals will be in place outside work hours and on weekends.
In addition to the culvert installation, the project involves shoulder conditioning in the work zone as well as repaving and striping over the new culvert.
This project is being managed collaboratively by the Federal Highway Administration and the National Park Service.
