Crescent board approves temporary school administrator

JOYCE — Crescent School District’s administrative assistant Kathy Silva will assume the duties of Superintendent Doug Kubalek until an interim superintendent can be found.

Kubalek, 59, suffered a stroke Saturday and is in serious condition at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.

The extent of Kubalek’s injuries from the stroke won’t be known for a while, but could include speech impairment and partial paralysis, according to his family.

Kubalek serves both as the district’s superintendent and principal of Crescent School, which enrolls less than 200 students and employs about 30 people.

Temporary appointment

Silva’s temporary appointment as the district’s top administrator was made unanimously by the School Board Tuesday night.

The board hopes to find an interim superintendent by the start of the school year, School Board President Tracey Grover said.

Many of the 18 people who attended the meeting, including the five-member School Board, said replacing Kubalek is be next to impossible.

However, with the need to start school by Sept. 6, a temporary appointment had to be made, Grover said.
