The Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts this weekend celebrates its 10th year of bringing worldwide entertainment to the North Olympic Peninsula.

What started with one woman’s vision to create a festival dedicated to variety has grown over the years to cover four days of entertainment.

Executive Director for the Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts Anna Manildi said the festival got its start when Karen Hannan moved to Port Angeles from Hawaii and decided it would be fun to have a large festival showcasing local talent with a diversity of groups and presentations.

Right from the beginning, this was a large undertaking.

The festival spanned three days on the third weekend of May each year. Location scheduling conflicts moved the festival to memorial Day Weekend about five years ago and organizers found no problem with filling an extra day of entertainment.

The first festival featured 65 groups, and this year’s event will have nearly double that, according to Manildi.
