PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team tuned up for Saturday’s NWAACC showdown with yet another shutout victory Wednesday.
The Pirates got two more goals from record-breaking sophomore striker Miguel Gonzales to beat West Division rival Tacoma 2-0 at Sigmar Field.
The victory marked the 12th straight for the Pirates to begin the season and set up a critical NWAACC No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup against Highline at home on Saturday.
“It wasn’t a pretty win but it was a win,” Peninsula men’s soccer coach Andrew Chapman said.
“We didn’t have the best first half but in the second half we started moving the ball quicker and we were able to get a couple of goals.”
Gonzalez netted both of his goals — Nos. 21 and 22 of the season — in the second half to boost the Pirates past Tacoma.
Both scores came off assists from Dean Gaynor, the latter on a through pass in the 67th minute that Gonzalez out-raced Tacoma keeper Alex Vogt for and tapped into goal.
Peninsula goalkeeper Jared Wilson recorded his seventh shutout of the season, making 13 saves, including several key stops late in the contest.
Peninsula out-shot Tacoma 27-16 on the game.
The top-ranked Pirates (6-0-0 in West, 12-0-0 overall) have now outscored teams 50-5 this fall. They have given up just one goal in their last six matches.
Peninsula will host Highline at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The second-ranked Thunderbirds are also unbeaten this season at 5-0-0 in divisional play and 7-0-1 overall.

PORT ANGELES — The Pirates saw a 500-minute scoreless streak snapped but were still able to come out with a comfortable win against the Titans.
The Pirates, who had won four straight shutout wins going into Wednesday’s NWAACC match, got goals from four different players to win their fifth in a row.
“I thought our backline was just awesome today.” Peninsula women’s coach Kanyon Anderson said.
“We only gave up four shots all game. That’s pretty dominant.”
Among the players scoring for the Pirates were Tabitha Bare, Felicia Collins, Kirah Kanari and Kendra Miner.
Bare, Collins and Kanari all scored in the first 24 minutes on assists from Shelby Solomon, Kelsie Ng and Collins.
Miner then added a fourth goal off a Sydney Bullington cross in the 88th minute before the team gave up its first score at home this season a minute after that.
Peninsula, first in the West Division at 6-1-0 and 7-2-2 overall, will also host on Highline on Saturday.
That game begins at noon.
