College Information Night at Port Angeles High School

Peninsula Daily News

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School guidance staff will host a College Information Night from 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. tonight in the auditorium at the school at 304 E. Park Ave.

Parents and students of all high school levels can obtain information about two-year or four-year colleges, technical colleges, athletic requirements, scholarships and financial aid.

Here are the speakers lined up for the evening.

— Bob Lawrence of Peninsula College, which is based in Port Angeles, will speak in Room 113 about technical college opportunities.

The five technical colleges in Washington state — Bates, Bellingham, Clover Park, Lake Washington, and Renton — offer a variety of technical and vocational training programs.

All programs lead to specific career certification so that students are certified and “job ready” upon completion.

Lawrence will talk about how to get into various programs, how long different training programs last, prospective job placement, and what starting salaries are like.

— In the auditorium, Kara Lindberg and Casey Melnrick of Washington State University will speak about four-year public college opportunities.

There are six public four-year colleges in Washington — WSU, Central, Eastern, University of Washington, Western and Evergreen.

Each college is different in its setting, size, personality, and programs but all follow fairly similar application procedures.

—   Private four-year colleges will be discussed in the high school library by Danielle Moore of St. Martin’s University.

Many of the more than 16 independent four-year colleges in the state are small, liberal arts colleges that offer attractive student-to-professor ratios.

They have similar admission requirements and application procedures.

—   Allison Crumb of Peninsula College will talk in the orchestra room about two-year colleges, of which there are 29 in the state.

Crumb will talk about admission requirements and time line for enrolling to earn an associate degree and about college transfer options.

—   Athletes will be interested in the talk in Room 105 by Marilou Michelena of the University of Washington.

She will discuss National Collegiate Athletic Association requirements for high school athletes who hope to compete at the college level.

—   Marielle Eykemans, PAHS scholarship notebook coordinator, will speak in Room 106 about students can access financial support through their “scholarship notebooks.”

Every year, more than $385,000 are awarded to graduating seniors in Port Angeles.

Eykemans will discuss the requirements for a notebook.

—   Financial aid will be the topic in the band room as Krista Francis and Amy Williamson of the Peninsula College financial aid office go into the form for Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, as well as other types of financial aid.

—   Pat Jensen and Alyson Rotter of the College Success Foundation will speak in Room 110 about the Washboard Scholarship website.

Through an account on the website, students can receive scholarship information tailored to specific academic goals.
