PORT ANGELES – Clallam County will become a “point of light” in a galaxy of more than 330 communities with volunteer centers, thanks to a Washington, D.C.-based foundation.
An announcement late last week included the county in a list of 10 locales that are interested in starting such centers, according to the Points of Light Foundation.
The center will be a clearinghouse of volunteer needs and opportunities, said the organization.
It also will offer volunteer management training.
The foundation’s support will be worth about $10,000 in training and travel to and from the foundation’s headquarters, said Beth Ludlum of Points of Light on Friday.
The center will start offering some services online by the end of its first year, said Jacques Livingston of Clallam County AmeriCorps, but it will take another year or two before it is fully functioning.
“We’ve been awarded a three-year startup,” Livingston said.
“It means we’re going to be under the guidance of the Points of Light Foundation.”
