Clallam County commissioners unanimously approved a junk vehicle ordinance Tuesday after two years of debate and numerous revisions.
“It is a good compromise,” Clallam County Commissioner Steve Tharinger, D-Sequim, said after the vote.
“We will see how it works and come back and adjust it if needed.”
Commissioner Mike Chapman, R-Port Angeles, agreed and thanked his colleagues and county staff for their work on the issue.
“At times there have been disagreements, but this has been a good collaboration,” Chapman said.
Tuesday’s 3-0 vote followed final revisions suggested by commissioners Monday.
Under the ordinance, if the county receives two written complaints — one of which must be from a property owner within 800 feet of an offending parcel — about junk vehicles on a property, then a public nuisance can be declared.
The owner of the property will be in violation if he or she has three or more junk vehicles on a lot smaller than two acres, or five on a two-acre or larger lot.
