Clallam: Locke presents $3 million skills center check

PORT ANGELES — Gov. Gary Locke presented a $3 million check to North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center officials during a small ceremony Friday afternoon at Peninsula College.

The money will help a consortium of five school district, Peninsula College, government agencies and area businesses develop a skills center for high school students and an incubator to help businesses grow.

“I commend all of you for your dedication,” Locke said. “This is a testament to the spirit and vision of all of the community leaders here today.”

Five school districts –Sequim, Port Angeles, Crescent, Quillayute Valley and Cape Flattery — and Peninsula College have partnered to build and operate a skills center with a main campus in Port Angeles and satellite centers throughout Clallam County.

County, city and tribal officials have partnered to build a business incubator in conjunction with the skills center.

Locke presented the check to Port Angeles School District Superintendent Gary Cohn, Quillayute Valley School District Superintendent Frank Walter, Crescent School District Superintendent Rich Wilson, Peninsula College President Thomas Keegan and North Olympic Peninsula Skills Consortium Vocational Director Nancy LaChapelle.
