PORT ANGELES — Clallam County residents will be able to view marriage licenses, maps, real estate deeds and other public documents on the Web when a $199,000 computer-recording system goes online.
County commissioners have discussed the document-recording system with Auditor Cathleen McKeown, whose office will pay for most of the software.
“Our system is really antiquated,” she told commissioners Monday.
It takes one step to scan a document with an optical character recognition program, a second step to record it, and a third to index it.
The process takes two to three weeks, McKeown said, and the document still is difficult to find.
The new system will accomplish the three tasks simultaneously and post them to the county Web site.
The software also will be able to “talk” to computers in the county assessor and county treasurer’s offices.
