PORT ANGELES — After months of painstaking cuts and employee layoffs, Clallam commissioners Tuesday approved a $60.3 million budget for 2003.
Commissioners this year grappled with a $1.8 million budget deficit as state revenues dry up during an economic downturn.
“I think it’s going to get more and more difficult,” county Administrator Dan Engelbertson said following budget approval.
The difficulty this year came with cutting 1.5 percent of the county’s $22.8 million general fund budget.
Commissioners also approved the layoffs or the elimination of 31 county positions.
Last year, county leaders cut 2.5 percent of the general fund budget and issued seven pink slips to employees.
