CLALLAM BAY — A prison inmate enjoyed a few hours of freedom this week when he was mistakenly released from Clallam Bay Corrections Center a year early.
Inmate Devon Daniels, 31, was apprehended aboard a state ferry off Kingston on Tuesday and transported back to the prison after prison officials detected the error.
Daniels, who was serving time for a Pierce County conviction on possession of stolen property, intimidating a witness and second-degree assault, was released Tuesday morning — 12 months before his scheduled release date of July 2005.
He rode public transportation to Kingston before the corrections center’s records office realized he owed more time, said LeAnne Fletcher, public information officer.
Captured aboard ferry
Officers from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Department and Washington State Patrol, with state community corrections officers, went to the Kingston ferry terminal, where they apprehended Daniels aboard the ferry without incident, Fletcher said.
The boat was delayed a few minutes as a result, she said.
Daniels posed no threat to the community during his short release, Fletcher added.
