Chimney fire, emergency response closes downtown Port Townsend streets

PORT TOWNSEND — A chimney fire briefly closed streets downtown Sunday.

The fire began in the chimney used by the Tin Brick, a restaurant located in the basement of 232 Taylor St., and was reported by four different people at 12:28 p.m., according to East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesman Bill Beezley.

No flames were visible, but there was a considerable amount of smoke, Beezley said.

Taylor and Washington streets were closed during the response to the fire.

Along with firefighters from East Jefferson Fire-Rescue, Port Ludlow and Indian Island crews were on hand along with the Port Townsend Police Department.

The firefighters used thermal imaging to locate hot spots and determined the fire was extinguished at around 1:40 p.m. Beezley said.

The cause of the fire had not been determined, but this type of fire often occurs when the chimney has not been cleaned properly.

One reported injury occurred at the scene when an unidentified woman tripped over a firehose when she was attempting to film the fire with her phone, according to Port Townsend Police Officer Nate Holmes.

She was treated by paramedics on the scene but declined further treatment, Beezley said.
