Chimacum School Board to consider pact with Port Townsend

Memorandum of Understanding to be developed for more collaboration

CHIMACUM — The Chimacum School Board on Wednesday will consider approving a joint resolution already signed by the Port Townsend School Board to develop a memorandum of understanding for a formal collaboration between the two districts.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The public can attend in person in the library at 91 West Valley Road — face masks are required — or via Zoom.

To get the Zoom address, meeting ID and passcode — as well as a full agenda — go to go.boarddocs.com/wa/chimacum/board.nsf/public.

After discussing collaboration for some time, Chimacum and Port Townsend combined high school sports programs in 2021. Students from each district are competing together as the East Jefferson Rivals.

The two districts also collaborated on a joint superintendent search that led to the selections in February of Linda Rosenbury of Burien to lead Port Townsend and Scott Mauk of Edmonds to lead Chimacum.

“It has taken a village to get to this point,” said Jennifer James-Wilson, Port Townsend school board member, at that time.

The resolution under consideration Wednesday will “build upon the success and momentum of jointly recruiting and hiring a pair of like-minded superintendents, combining the high school athletic programs, collaborating through the Transportation Co-op and coordinating meal programs with locally sourced foods,” the resolution says.

The two district superintendents will be expected to develop an MOU for a “student-centered” collaboration to support their academic and emotional development.

The Port Townsend School Board signed the resolution on Thursday after a discussion about continuing to smooth the combining of athletic programs and other issues related to how the districts operate differently.
