Child, 5, dies in fire; 1-year-old flown to Seattle

Fire agencies respond to blaze on Gasman Road

PORT ANGELES — A fire in the 1300 block of Gasman Road claimed the life of one child and another was seriously injured.

Just before 7:45 p.m. Sunday, emergency services were alerted to a motorhome on fire. Despite rapid intervention, a 5-year-old child died and a 1-year-old was injured.

The injured child was transported to Olympic Medical Center and then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center for further treatment. As of Monday, the patient’s status was unknown, according to a press release from the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Clallam County Fire District 3 and Clallam County Sheriff’s Office detectives.

Preliminary findings indicate the fire may have been started by a small refrigerator and that the children were left unattended for an unknown period of time, according to the press release.

Ten fire engines, tenders and ambulances and more than 20 individuals responded to the incident from five separate agencies, according to a press release from Clallam County Fire District 3.

Numerous off-duty personnel and volunteers stepped in to cover additional calls for service while the on-duty crews were on scene.
