Celebrating Planet North Olympic Peninsula

Sunday is the 37th edition of Earth Day.

Time to remember our reverence for the planet, to honor and cuddle close to the nurturing bosom of Mother Nature.

You love Mother Nature, you say?

Just how much do you love your mother?

Shall we put it to a little test?

How about getting out there with some garbage bags and gloves?

The Olympic Coast Cleanup is Saturday and Sunday and celebrates Earth Day by targeting hundreds of miles of beaches along Olympic National Park, the Makah Reservation and Ocean Shores.

Last year there were 751 registered volunteers who collected more than 20 tons of trash from Neah Bay south to Long Beach.

Volunteers can participate individually, or team up with friends and co-workers to clean up a beach.

Marine debris – nets, floats, rubber tires, ropes, boxes, crab pots and lots of plastic – poses a variety of threats to wildlife in addition to detracting from the beauty of the coast.

Volunteers help with a wide range of tasks, from picking up trash at popular day use beaches to backpacking to remote beaches, to carrying filled trash bags from beach to parking lot, to greeting and orienting volunteers at park ranger stations.

It’s not too late to sign up – phone 206-364-2689, or click on www.olympiccoastcleanup.us.
