Car reported to drive off cliff

PORT TOWNSEND — A Port Hadlock man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Wednesday afternoon after blacking out and launching his car off a cliff near Adelma Beach, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael J. Larson, 57, of Port Hadlock was not listed as a patient at Harborview on Thursday morning, according to Harborview spokeswoman Barbara Clements.

A dog that was in the car was taken to the Humane Society of Jefferson County, according to authorities.

A witness reported seeing the vehicle drive off the cliff toward the beach about 4 p.m., an online post from the sheriff’s office stated.

When East Jefferson Fire Rescue and sheriff’s personnel arrived, they determined the vehicle was airborne for approximately 150 feet and rolled several times, ejecting Larson.

Sheriff’s deputies interviewed Larson, who reported driving southbound on South Discovery Road before blacking out. He received immediate medical care before he was loaded into an ambulance, taken to Jefferson International Airport and airlifted to Harborview by Airlift Northwest.

In addition to East Jefferson Fire Rescue and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Coast Guard also responded.

Construction workers stand on what remains of the old U.S. 101 bridge over the Elwha River on Wednesday as the aging structure is dismantled. The old bridge, built in 1926, was in danger of washout when the river beneath changed course and engineers discovered the bridge piers were built on gravel instead of bedrock, leading to constructon of a new bridge, at right, which was opened to traffic in 2024. The old bridge was to remain in place until a fish-spawning window, which runs from mid-July until the end of August.
