Canoe capsizes near Hood Canal Bridge

SHINE — Two people ended up in the water when their motorized canoe capsized on the north side of the Hood Canal Bridge.

The unidentified couple had their two dogs in the boat with them when the wind came up, causing the boat to tip over at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to Port Ludlow Fire &Rescue.

Both people were evaluated on scene. A woman was transported to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton in stable condition, suffering from hypothermia, firefighters said.

A man had minor injuries but did not require hospitalization, and the couple’s dogs had no injuries, firefighters said.

State bridge staff, Poulsbo medics and a Kitsap County sheriff’s deputy were the first on the scene and worked together using recently purchased rescue ladders to get the people out of the water.

Port Ludlow Fire and Rescue’s Marine 31 rescue boat, recently acquired through a local agreement from North Kitsap Fire Department, and a medic unit from Port Ludlow also assisted.

Poulsbo Fire Department’s Marine 71 also was deployed to the scene.

Port Ludlow’s Marine 31 towed the canoe back to Port Ludlow Marina.
