Brinnon School District to present information on proposed levy

BRINNON — Information about a proposed maintenance and operation property tax levy, which will be on the Feb. 14 special election ballot, will be presented Tuesday.

Brinnon Superintendent Wally F. Lis will make a presentation and School Board members will answer questions at the levy information meeting at 5 p.m., said Valerie Schindler, board chairwoman.

The meeting will be at the Brinnon School Library, 46 Schoolhouse Road, and will be followed by the regular meeting of the board at 6 p.m.

Brinnon Elementary School serves about 30 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

The proposed two-year levy will replace a levy that expires this year.

In 2013, the school is seeking $293,653, which is no increase from this year’s levy amount, according to the school’s website at www.bsd46.org, and which includes $72,500 for payments to neighboring school districts for the high school education of Brinnon students.

The rate is estimated at $1.08 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

In 2014, the levy amount would increase by 2 percent to $299,526, and also will include payments for high school students.

The 2014 rate is estimated at $1.10 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

The maintenance and operation property tax levy funds 31 percent of the district’s operating budget, say officials.

In addition to high school payments, the levy funds the purchase of materials, state requirements for special education that are not funded by the state, building maintenance and repairs, preschool, breakfast and lunch programs and operating expenses such as utilities.

Other levy requests

Three other East Jefferson County districts are proposing property tax levies on the Feb. 14 special election ballot.

The Port Townsend district seeks a four-year $1,181,500 capital levy.

Chimacum seeks a six-year $1,325,000 capital projects levy.

Quilcene seeks a four-year maintenance and operation levy that would collect $495,500 its first year and $540,095 the fourth year.

In West Jefferson County, the Queets Clearwater School District is asking voters to approve a three-year, $75,000 educational programs and programs replacement levy.

In Clallam County, the Crescent School District in Joyce will ask voters to approve a four-year, $495,713 maintenance and operation expenses levy.
