PORT ANGELES — The city of Port Angeles plans to reopen the Blue Mountain Transfer Station on July 5.
The station at 1469 Blue Mountain Road will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
In March, when the transfer station was shut down, city officials had said that they expected to close it for only about six weeks.
That period of time was extended as supply-chain issues slowed purchases of new software and communication and security upgrades, according to a city press release.
“At this time, we are pleased to announce that software upgrades, communication upgrades, general facilities clean-up and repairs, and security improvements are nearly complete and will allow for the reopening on July 5th,” city officials said in the release.
A mediator resolved a termination-of-contract dispute over solid waste and recycling collection services with Waste Connections Jan. 18, which led to the city’s March 1 takeover of the company’s waste and recycling collection duties.
Thomas Hunter, city director of Public Works, has said that Waste Connections would not lease or sell its apparatus to the city for the Blue Mountain Transfer Station.
The 18th Street regional transfer station that had been operated by Waste Connections was taken over by the city for $3 million as part of the mediated resolution.
Glass recycling services were halted with the city’s takeover of the service until a market is found for the refuse, Hunter has said.
Other recycling services for paper and plastic were to remain.
