PORT ANGELES – Clallam County batted one for three Tuesday in bids on public projects, but the hit was a home run.
Two proposals to remodel the county jail both came in below engineer’s estimates on the project that had been scaled back due to earlier overbids.
Bids to remodel the Home Arts Building at the county fairgrounds and to replace doors on cabins at Camp David Jr., however, exceeded the county’s calculations.
The overbids didn’t diminish county officials’ delight with the jail proposals, though.
Last April, county commissioners opened bids on what they thought would be a $2.5 million project to expand the jail from 96 beds to 120.
Each of two proposals overshot the estimate by more than $1 million.
That sent Sheriff Bill Benedict and architect Robert Glass & Associates of Spokane literally back to the drawing board.
