Benefits, virtual treks, cars and sailing among events this weekend

Showers, showers, showers, SUN, showers, showers, showers, SUN.

It’s the summer/fall transition, and the vine maples are already showing orange and yellow among the green hillsides.

There are also plenty of good things to do this weekend.

Here are just some of the events waiting for you:

Food bank benefit

PORT ANGELES — Irwin Dental Center is hosting its second annual Community Harvest Breakfast food bank fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The breakfast will be at the dental center, 620 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles.

“Our breakfast is being prepared by Bella Italia,” said Darci Ulin at the dental center.

“And 100 percent of all proceeds go to benefit the Clallam County Food Bank.”

Breakfast will be pancakes, cheesy eggs, hash browns, Tuscan ham, sausage, fruit, juice and Bella Rosa coffee!

Admission is $5 and at least one food donation per person.

Suggested food donation: Peanut butter, tuna, canned or dried beans, baby food (and diapers), pet food or powdered milk.

“Please join us for wonderful food and music, or drop your food donations off at our office Saturday morning if you can’t stay for breakfast,” Ulin said.

Last year’s fundraiser collected 1,540 pounds of food and $2,539 for the food bank.

Kids’ Safety Day

A Kids’ Safety Day will be hosted at Ruddell Auto Mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event is for pre-teen children and their parents at the auto dealership, 110 Golf Course Road off U.S. Highway 101 in east Port Angeles.

It will feature free bike helmets for kids. free hot dogs and kids traffic school (“a time for your child to learn some traffic safety rules and meet some police officers.”).

There will be fire trucks, Happy Tymer Clowns — and parents can have their kids’ car seats checked for proper instalation.

The event is sponsored by the Parenting Matter Foundation.

West End Thunder

FORKS — Fast cars will race at West End Thunder’s one-eighth-mile drag racing at Forks Municipal Airport Saturday and Sunday.

Racing begins at 10 a.m. both days.

The cost of admission is $10. Children 12 and under are admitted free.

Car club

QUILCENE — The South County Cruisers Car Club will leave Quilcene for the West End Thunder drag races at 7:15 a.m. Sunday.

Fundraiser

SEQUIM — The Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital plans a fundraiser today.

The guild offers food and bunco at 12:30 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 325 N. Fifth Ave.

Admission is $12 per person. Proceeds will go toward helping families of patients who need assistance.

Living history

PORT TOWNSEND — The fourth annual “Step Back in History Encampment” will be held at Fort Townsend State Park from 9 am. to 3 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The encampment include frontier re-enactors, rifle and cannon firing demonstrations, a trading post and games from the 1800s.

Reach for Hospice

SEQUIM — The Reach for Hospice sailboat regatta will race across Sequim Bay, leaving from the John Wayne Marina, 2577 W. Sequim Bay Road, at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The event is free, but donations to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, which provides free services, are encouraged.

Reach for Hospice sailboat regatta will bring 14 sailboats to this year’s race.

In 2008, the race raised $25,094 in donations to the hospice, which provides skilled nurses for patients so their family members can get away to run errands or rest.

Organizers hope to collect a little more this year.

Virtual trek

PORT ANGELES — “Tapestry of Movement,” a collection of seminars, booths and demonstrations at City Pier, will kick off the inaugural Olympic Discovery Trail Virtual Challenge from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Participants in the six-week virtual “journey” across the North Olympic Peninsula from LaPush to Port Townsend will keep track of a rough number of steps they take doing aerobic activity ­– or convert non-step movement like swimming, bicycling and yoga into steps with a conversion table.

Using 2,000 steps as the equivalent of one mile, participants — individuals or teams — will mark boxes on sheets of paper to track their progress along the 160-mile virtual trail, with milestones at Sappho, Joyce, Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend.

People can sign up for the virtual trek Sunday at the event that will offer short seminars on yoga, belly dancing, senior Olympics and martial arts.

It will conclude with a aerobic exercise for everyone called “Everybody Dance to YMCA World Rhythms” at 2:30 p.m.

Special expertise, gear and demonstrations will be available at booths.

Discussion group

SEQUIM — The Sequim Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet at Sequim Public Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to noon today.

The topic, “Diplomacy Inc. — The Influence of Lobbies on U.S. Foreign Policy,” was taken from the Foreign Policy Association’s “Great Decisions 2009” publication and current articles in Foreign Affairs magazine.

Tango lessons

PORT ANGELES — Argentine tango lessons will be offered for all ages at the Eagles Hall beginning Sunday.

Lessons will be at the hall at 110 S. Penn St., in Port Angeles, at 6:30 p.m. for basic beginner and 7:30 p.m. for intermediate/advanced lessons.

The cost is $50 for Eagles members and $60 for non-members.

Annual garage sale

PORT ANGELES — The second weekend of the Clallam County Historical Society’s annual garage sale will be today and Saturday.

The garage sale — the society’s largest fundraiser of the year — will be at the old Lincoln School site at Eighth and C streets from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

Items will be sold for half-price today and a “Buck-A-Bag” on Saturday. The sale began last weekend.

Sale items include fabrics, hardware, electronics, records, CDs and videos, clothing, linens, crafts, jewelry, collectibles and books.

Proceeds from the sale will help support the society’s operations.

Ship presentation

CHIMACUM — Geoff Briggs, a Port Townsend builder and youth worker, will present his story of “Viking Shipbuilding,” during a program at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 W. Valley Road, at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The program, sponsored by Thea Foss No. 45, Daughters of Norway, will focus on the construction of a 56-foot-long boat as it is built with tools and patterns used in ancient days.

Briggs will present photographs of the boat in Anacortes with Jay Smith, trained in Roskilde, Denmark’s Viking Museum.

Upon completion, Briggs plans to use the ship for wilderness expeditions, sailing and leadership training.

Benefit breakfast

SEQUIM — A breakfast to benefit the Sequim food bank will be held at Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, from 8:30 a.m. to noon today.

The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 6 to 10, with those under 6 admitted free.

Reading to dogs

PORT ANGELES — Children are invited to bring books to read to dogs at the Port Angeles Public Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Olympic Gentle Paws will bring the dogs. A selection of books also will be provided.

Flower bulbs on sale

PORT ANGELES — Spring-blooming flower bulbs will be sold by the Port Angeles Rotary Club today and Saturday as a fundraising project.

The imported bulbs from Holland include 80 different varieties of daffodils, tulips, dutch irises, hyacinths and crocus — and, for the first time, bearded iris.

The Rotary Club is setting up its tent at the corner of First and Washington streets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, said Steve Methner, club president.

A total of 39,000 flower bulbs were ordered.

Gardeners who pre-ordered bulbs from Rotary earlier in the summer can pick up their orders during the two-day sale, Methner said.

Funds raised from the sale go to such Rotary projects as youth scholarships, the Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics — or VIMO — free clinic, literacy and international service projects.

It also helps fund the club’s Welcome Garden, which spans the city’s eastern entrance of U.S. Highway 101 with colorful flowers from April to June each year.

Free inspections

PORT TOWNSEND — Free child car seat inspections will be offered during PARK(ing) Day today.

Inspections and information about children in and around cars will be offered in the parking lot at 607 Water St., the former Port Townsend Police Department, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is sponsored by Port Townsend Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Sequim Police Department and State Farm Insurance.

Children’s groups

PORT ANGELES — Children 5 and older are invited to attend Youth Community Connection, “one stop to find your spot,” at Masonic Temple, 622 S. Lincoln St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Participants will learn about various local groups, including Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, Camp Fire USA, Girl Scouts, International Order of Rainbow for Girls, 4-H and DeMolay International.

Camera knowledge

SEQUIM — Olympic Peaks Camera Club will present “What You Need to Know about your Camera” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The program will be at the Museum and Arts Center, 175 Cedar St., Sequim.

Photographers Valerie Henschel, Jim Martin and Witta Priester will answer questions about cameras, the chemical darkroom, black and white photography and Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom computer programs.

Poker Run

JOYCE — The Crescent School Scholarship Fund Motorcycle Poker Run will take place Saturday.

Registration will be from 10 a.m. to noon.

The cost is $20 for riders and $10 for passengers, which includes a barbecue at Family Kitchen, located across from Joyce General Store, at 2:30 p.m. Members of the public can attend the barbecue for $5 a person.

The ride will begin and end at Family Kitchen.

Destinations along the route will be Clallam Bay, Hungry Bear Cafe on U.S. Highway 101 and Zaks in Port Angeles.

A 50/50 drawing and first, second and third prizes will be awarded at 3:30 p.m.

Potluck social

PORT ANGELES — Members of the public are invited to attend a potluck booster social at Dry Creek Community Grange, 3520 Edgewood Drive, at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Granger of the Year and Citizen of the Year awards will be presented at 6 p.m.

Skateboard contest

The Duhbowl Trouble skateboard contest will be held in Port Angeles and Forks Saturday and Sunday.

The contests, both of which will begin at 11 a.m., will be at the Port Angeles skateboard park, at Fourth and Race streets, on Saturday, and at the Forks Skateboard Park, 437 Tillicum Lane, on Sunday.

The winner of each day’s contest will be awarded $200. The winner of the series will get another $200.

The entry fee is $10.

The contest is sponsored by the Lib Tech skateboard company, and locally, by the West End Surf & Skate of Forks.
