Agnew: Bridge made out of a railroad flatcar to be dropped over creek in eastern Clallam

AGNEW — Clallam County Road Department workers are expected next week to drop an 89-foot section of bridge over McDonald Creek as part of final link of Olympic Discovery Trail between Port Angeles and Sequim.

The bridge, made from the undercarriage of a railroad flatcar, was moved last Friday from the county Road Department gravel pit in Sequim to the site.

A temporary bridge has been built across the creek, also known as McDonnell Creek, to allow worker access to install the permanent span between Abbott and Pinnell roads.

Other missing links to the trail that will be closed in 2004 are along the stretch from Siebert Creek to Sequim, county officials said. They include a section of Abbott, Barr and Spring roads.

The other major missing trail link between Sequim and Port Angeles is a 1.1-mile stretch to be built in conjunction with work to improve West Hendrickson Road, from the Sequim city limit near Kendall Road west to Railroad Bridge Park at the Dungeness River.

That project could start this summer, county road officials said.
