Agency vows to hire veteran for shared county post

PORT ANGELES — Serenity House has promised to hire a vet for a veterans assistant position it could share with Clallam County.

A successful applicant’s service in the armed forces would be part of the experience required for the position, much like a precondition for a certain level of education.

Aides to Kathy Wahto, executive director of Serenity House, said Wednesday she had guaranteed the job would go to a vet — preferably a disabled veteran.

They spoke at the monthly meeting of the Shelter Providers Network of Clallam County, a coalition of more than 50 public and private agencies that serve people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Wahto herself was attending a state-sponsored supportive housing institute in Spokane and was unavailable for comment.

As for the vets, members of the county Veterans Association will gather at 1 p.m. today in the Veterans Center, 261 S. Francis St., to discuss options for filling the position.
