AAUW Port Townsend to host get acquainted session

PORT TOWNSEND — AAUW Port Townsend will host its annual welcome back/get acquainted session from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16.

The meeting will be at the Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St.

This year, the American Association of University Women-Port Townsend, the largest branch in the state, celebrates its 60th anniversary.

During the meeting, current and prospective members will learn about the history of AAUW and progress on women’s issues, sign up for interest groups and volunteer for activities that support AAUW’s educational projects and scholarships in 2017-18.

Subsequent AAUW meetings this year will feature programs on “Heroes in Our Midst,” with speakers who have contributed to the community’s education, environment and well-being, said Anne Englander, AAUW-PT spokeswoman.

AAUW Port Townsend and its affiliate, The University Women’s Foundation of Jefferson County, promote education and equity through various scholarships and awards, middle school career days and elementary school projects in literacy and math.

Recently, AAUW/UWF provided $55,000 in scholarships and awards to young women from East Jefferson County and sent seven middle school girls to Tech Trek, a weeklong science and math summer camp.

Kyle Zimmerman, co-owner of The Hub at Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles, adds a new coat of paint on Wednesday to an advertising sign on the back of his building that was uncovered during the demolition of a derelict building that once hid the sign from view. Zimmerman said The Hub, formerly Mathews Glass and Howe's Garage before that, is being converted to an artist's workspace and entertainment venue with an opening set for late May or early June. Although The Hub will have no control over any new construction that might later hide the automotive signs, Zimmerman said restoring the paint is an interesting addition to the downtown area for as long as it lasts.
