Chili cookoff
BEAVER — The eighth annual Bear Creek Potluck Chili Cookoff will be Saturday.
The cookoff will be beside the Hungry Bear Cafe, located 14 miles east of Forks on U.S. Highway 101.
Setup will take place after 8 a.m., followed by a cooks’ meeting at 11:30 a.m. Cooking will begin at noon and end at 3 p.m.
Trophies will be awarded for the top three chilies.
Past winners include Don Bedinger, 2002; Laurel Burtness, 2003; Cris White, 2004 and 2005; Wes Romberg, 2006 and 2007; and Donald “D” Bedinger III, 2008.

Smokin Joe’s Rhythm & Blues will perform live music during the cookoff.
Free hot dogs and hamburgers will be available.
Games for children, raffle drawings and a beer garden will be featured.
Tails to Trails
SEQUIM — Welfare for Animals Guild — WAG — will hold its annual Tails to Trails dog walk at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Road, on Saturday.
Families and dogs can register between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for $15.
The walk, to benefit homeless dogs, will also feature games, entertainment, prizes, massages, photos and auctions.
It is sponsored by WAG and the Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club.

Annual garage sale
PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Historical Society will hold its largest fundraiser of the year today and Saturday.
The garage sale will take place at Lincoln School, Eighth and C streets, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
Sale items will include fabrics, hardware, electronics, records, CDs and videos, clothing, linens, crafts and jewelry. There also will be collectible and book sections.
“Once again, I’m so pleased with the quality and quantity of our garage sale items,” said Kathy Monds, executive director.
“The fact that we will be adding new merchandise during the sale is a new feature, so shoppers will want to visit us more than once.”
Proceeds from the sale will help support the society’s operations.
Miles of yard sales
JOYCE — The Juan de Fuca Scenic Byway Association will sponsor the second annual Great Strait Sale, a 61-mile yard sale on state Highway 112, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Community sale sites will be set up in each of the communities along the route at the Joyce Depot Museum, Clallam Bay school bus barn and Neah Bay Village Market, next to Washburn’s.
Sales at private residences and businesses will be advertised on signs along the highway.
Fliers listing sale locations are available in Port Angeles at Wagner’s, 242811 W. U.S. Highway 101, and other local businesses a few days before the event.
Maps also will be available at all community sale sites the day of the event.

Vintage cars
PORT TOWNSEND — Some 30 to 40 motorcars, all built before 1916, will be on display at Memorial Field on Sunday.
Participants of the tour of Port Townsend and East Jefferson County– which is sponsored by the Horseless Carriage Club of America’s Skagit-Snohomish Regional Group, based in Mount Vernon — are expected to arrive Sunday about noon and have a picnic at Memorial Field. They will be in Port Townsend until early Thursday.
They will be parked at Memorial Field in Port Townsend from 3 p.m. to about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Using the Harborside Inn, 330 Benedict St., in Port Townsend as a base, participants will make excursions to Bundy’s Troll Haven on Discovery Bay, tour an antique car collection on Marrowstone Island and tour the Old Consulate Inn in Port Townsend.
The local Rakers Car Club will provide chase cars — or escort vehicles — for the tour.
The drivers welcome people to the Harborside Inn to see the cars, and they plan to visit Blue Heron Middle School to show them to students from 11:10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
Book sale
PORT HADLOCK — Friends of the Jefferson County Library will hold a book sale Saturday.
It will take place at the County Library Garage, 620 Cedar St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Variety dance
PORT ANGELES — Disc jockey Terry “Wild-Wild” West will host a dance at the Eagles Hall, 110 S. Penn St., from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.
Prior to the dance, a “West Coast Swing” class will take place at 7 p.m.
Music will include swing, tango, Latin and ballroom.
Mixers and door prizes will be featured.

Memory Walk
PORT TOWNSEND — The Alzheimer’s Association will hold its first annual Port Townsend Memory Walk, “We’re on the Move to End Alzheimer’s,” on Saturday.
Registration for the 4-mile walk will take place at Port Townsend Brewing Co., 330 10th St., at 9 a.m.
The walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. along the Larry Scott Memorial Trail.
There is no cost to participate, but donations will be accepted for the Alzheimer Association.

Dinner, drawing
PORT TOWNSEND — A spaghetti dinner and raffle drawing will be held at the American Legion Hall, 209 Monroe St., from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
Cost for dinner is $5 a person or $15 per family.
Proceeds will benefit a new roof for the Legion, homeless shelter and MASH, or Medical Advocacy and Services Headquarters, Clinic.

Upstage salsa
PORT TOWNSEND — Salsa Night At The Upstage will take place at 923 Washington St. on Sunday.
Chris Clow and Judy Rudolph will teach an intermediate dance lesson at 5:30 p.m.
Cost is $3 a person.
A free beginning salsa lesson will take place at 6:30 p.m., followed by a dance from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Dance, live music
JOYCE — A benefit concert and dance will be held at Crescent Grange, 50724 state Highway 112, at 7 p.m. today.
David Secord with Luck of the Draw will perform live music.
Proceeds will help support Clallam County Fire Protection District No. 4’s building for an educational fire safety trailer, which is currently located outside the Joyce fire station.
Club hikes planned
The Olympic Outdoor Club will lead two hikes in the Sequim area on Saturday and Sunday.
The group will hike the Upper Dungeness Trail to Camp Handy — 6.8-mile round-trip, with an elevation gain of 600 feet and a high point at 3,100 feet — Saturday.
Participants will then hike the Baldy Trail — a 9-mile hike, with an elevation gain of 3,700 feet and a high point at 6,550 feet — Sunday.
For both hikes, participants from the Quimper Peninsula will meet at Quimper Credit Union in Port Hadlock at 8 a.m.
Hikers from Port Angeles and Sequim will meet at the entrance to Sequim Bay State Park at 8:30 a.m.

Trail work party
SEQUIM — The Peninsula Trails Coalition will hold its Second Saturday Work Party from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Workers will replace bridge decking on the Dungeness Bridge at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.
Carpenters and helpers are invited.

Team car wash
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School Rider Angels Dance Team will hold a car wash-a-thon fundraiser at Swain’s General Store, 602 E. First St., from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
Car wash tickets can be purchased in advance by phoning 360-452-7340 or from any member of the dance team.
People who purchase tickets before Sunday will receive a free bag of popcorn from Swain’s.
Those who do not purchase tickets can get their cars washed for $5.
Funds will benefit the dance team’s trip to Washington, D.C., in spring of 2010.
Argentine tango
PORT ANGELES — Anne-Sophie Ville and Josh Rigley will present Argentine tango classes at Sons of Norway Hall, 131 W. Fifth St., on Saturday.
A beginners class, “Tango, the Walking Conversation; Our Roles as Listeners and Talkers,” will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., followed by a class for dancers of all levels from 2 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
It is called, “Got Musicality?”
Intermediate dancers may attend for “Twisters . . . Overturned Movements” from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Cost is $20 for a single workshop; $35 for two workshops; and $45 for all three workshops.
In the evening, a free introductory milonga lesson will be presented at 7 p.m., followed by a milonga dance with music provided by DJ Jamie Collier at 7:30 p.m.
Cost is $10 a person.

Shred event slated
FORKS — Members of the public are encouraged to bring sensitive documents — old tax returns, account statements or any paperwork with account or Social Security numbers or other personal information — to shred Saturday.
Documents will be disposed of by LeMay Mobile Shredding at First Federal, 131 Calawah Way, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
There is no cost to participate.
First Federal security personnel will be available to answer questions and provide information on identity theft.

Lions Poker Run
PORT ANGELES — Sequim Valley Lions’ first “Indian Summer Poker Run” will take place Saturday.
People interested in participating can register and begin their ride at Olympic Power Sports, 221 S. Peabody St., between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
The ride will continue around Hood Canal and end in Sequim at Islander Pizza & Pasta, 380 E. Washington St., at 4 p.m. with pizza, prize drawings and awards.
Along the route, participants will stop at Lucky Dog Casino to receive seven-card poker hands.
At the end of the event, the person with the best five-card hand will get first pick at a prize.
Cost is $10 per driver, plus $10 per passenger.
Proceeds will benefit the Lions Club’s community projects, as well as its hearing aid and eyeglasses programs.
