PORT TOWNSEND — Girls in junior and senior high school now have the opportunity to work together this summer to create solutions to environmental and public health issues in Jefferson County at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center thanks to a $4,000 grant from the Fund for Women and Girls.

The Teens Project will utilize skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to encourage girls to pursue education and careers in these fields in which women are underrepresented.

Hands-on activities will include field trips and the chance to meet with Jefferson County women currently working in STEM jobs.

The Fund for Women and Girls, a field-of-interest endowed fund through the Jefferson County Community Foundation, envisions a world where women are safe, economically secure and free from discrimination so they can reach their full potential, according to a news release.

Last year’s grant was awarded to the Clemente Course and Dove House for the Clemente Family Financial Literacy and Empowerment Project.
