A dog show, roller derby and other events are planned on the North Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

SEQUIM
Kennel club show
SEQUIM — Several hundred canines are expected to compete in the Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club’s 15th annual dog show today through Sunday.
The show will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day on the Blake family property adjacent to Carrie Blake Park in Sequim.
Contests will be held by breed as well as obedience trials.
To participate in the breed contests, a dog must be registered with the American Kennel Club and must be purebred.
The Emerald City K-9 Freestyle Dancers will perform at noon Saturday and Sunday.
Vendors featuring dog foods, supplies, photography and canine souvenirs will be on-site.
Admission for dog show observers is free.
Parking is free today and $5 per day on the weekend, or $8 for both Saturday and Sunday.
Dogs not participating are not allowed on show grounds.
Car wash benefit
SEQUIM — The Sequim High School cross-country team will hold a fundraising car wash in the parking lot of Tarcisio’s, 609 W. Washington St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Donations will help the runners make a trip to Seaside, Ore., to compete in the annual “3 Course Challenge” in September.

Poker Run
SEQUIM — The Sequim Valley Lions Club’s fourth annual benefit poker run will be Saturday.
Participants will register at 10 a.m. at The Islander Pizza and Pasta Shack, 380 E. Washington St.
Each will get a hamburger lunch, a T-shirt and the opportunity to win a prize.
A raffle and silent auction also are planned.
The poker run raises money for community projects.
The Islander will be open at 6 a.m. for breakfast.
The following Saturday, the Lions Club will host a crab and oyster feed in the parking lot behind The Islander for $20 a ticket.

Solar program
SEQUIM — A free orientation workshop for Solarize Sequim, a group purchasing program for solar photovoltaic installations, will be conducted from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The workshop by Power Trip Energy of Port Townsend will be at McComb Gardens, 751 McComb Road.
The program is available to customers of the Clallam County Public Utility District who live east of the Port Angeles city limit.
Installations will occur in this fall and winter. Enrollees must register before Sept. 20.

Kayak discussion
PORT ANGELES — Visiting Greenland National Kayaking Champion Helen Wilson will present “Greenland Culture and the Kayak Championships” from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.
The talk will be at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.
Admission is $5.
On Saturday and Sunday, Wilson and British kayaker Mark Tozer will conduct several rolling sessions.

Jim’s helps out
PORT ANGELES — Jim’s Pharmacy will serve hot dogs and lemonade in exchange for a donation to the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society today.
Food will be available at Jim’s Pharmacy, 424 E. Second St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Suggested items for donation include dry dog food, canned cat food, nonclumping kitty litter and paper towels.
Cash donations also will be accepted.
In addition, the Humane Society will be running an off-site pet adoption in the parking lot at Jim’s from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Flea market set
PORT ANGELES — A community flea market and yard sale sponsored by Mount Pleasant Grange will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Roller derby bout
PORT ANGELES — Port Scandalous Roller Derby will host a “Matinee Madness” bout against the Oly Rollers Bella Donnas at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Lord of the Rings films
PORT ANGELES — Youths in grades seven through 12 can enjoy a marathon of movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today.
All three films of the trilogy will be screened at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., during the event.
Attendees may come in costume, and prizes will be given for the most creative, most authentic and funniest costume. Costumes will be judged at 5 p.m.
Snacks will be served throughout the day.
This event is part of “You Are Here,” the North Olympic Library System’s Summer Reading program for young adults.
The Summer Reading 2011 series continues through Saturday, Aug. 6.

PORT ANGELES — Angeles Academy of Hair and Nails, 1222 E. Front St., will hold a garage and bake sale from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the academy’s student fund.
Veterans Park bell ringing
PORT ANGELES — A ceremony to honor veterans and active-military service members who have died in the past month will be at Veterans Park today.
The ceremony will start at 1 p.m. and last about 10 to 15 minutes.
On the last Friday of every month, a ceremonial bell ringing is held at the park on Lincoln Street next to the Clallam County Courthouse.
Each name is read aloud. Members of various posts offer a formal presentation of Colors and taps is played.
The ceremony is open to the public.
PORT TOWNSEND/JEFFERSON COUNTY
Brews for a cause
PORT TOWNSEND — The third annual Edensaw Community Cancer Foundation Brewfest is scheduled for Saturday.
The festival will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Port Townsend Brewing Co., 330 10th St.
Besides brews, the festival will include live music and food.

Kayaks at Fort Worden
PORT TOWNSEND — Hundreds of kayaks are expected at the annual West Coast Wooden Kayak Rendezvous at Fort Worden State Park this weekend.
The event, which extends from 1 p.m. today to 3 p.m. Sunday, is open to the public and is free, though donations to cover park fees will be accepted.
Participants can bring their homemade kayaks or canoes or just come to see the boats.
Demonstrations will cover some of the basic processes of kayak construction. A group dinner is planned at the Beach Kitchen Shelter on Saturday evening.

Puffin Cruise on Saturday
PORT TOWNSEND — Cruises to see the tufted puffins of Protection Island are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday as well as Aug. 6.
The cruises, which are aboard the Glacier Spirit, depart from Point Hudson Marina and venture close to the island at the mouth of Discovery Bay.
Nesting pairs of tufted puffins are in full breeding plumage and close to Protection Island now, said Anne Murphy, executive director for the marine science center, adding that the center cannot guarantee puffin sightings.
Naturalists provide on-board commentary during the cruises.
Proceeds benefit the center’s educational programs.
Cruises are $55 per person — $50 for members of the center, Burke Museum, Audubon Society or Washington Ornithological Society.

PORT HADLOCK — A celebration of the efforts to bring a Camphill-inspired project for people with disabilities to Jefferson County will be held at 251 Kennedy Road from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Habitat store opens
QUILCENE — The new Habitat for Humanity store will celebrate its grand opening this weekend.
A premier opening for local residents will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.
The official grand opening is set for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Donations may be brought to the store from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays.
The store’s regular hours will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Proceeds from the store will be used to repair homes in Quilcene.
WEST END
Forks swap meet
FORKS — Forks Open Aire Market will host a swap meet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The swap meet will be held in addition to the regular market booths in the parking lot and surrounding area south of the Forks Timber Museum across from the Forks Airport on U.S. Highway 101.

FORKS — An American Legion representative will discuss the re-establishment of Post 106 on Saturday.

Growing berries
NEAH BAY — Guidelines for growing berries on the North Olympic Peninsula will be presented Saturday.
Washington State University Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will speak from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the classroom at the Makah Museum, 1880 Bay View Ave., in Neah Bay.
She will tell about selecting planting and growing strawberries at 2 p.m., raspberries at 2:30 p.m., blackberries at 3 p.m. and blueberries at 3:30 p.m.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
