The presentation will focus on the role of rotating microplates and megablocks in the Earth’s crust along the zone where the Juan de Fuca Plate converges with, and plunges under, the larger North American Plate.

This zone, known as the Cascadian Convergence, lies about 100 miles west of the coastline to the Cascade Mountains.

Wells has used field geology, magnetic rock properties — or paleomagnetism — and GPS to solve large-scale problems in determining the Earth’s ongoing structural evolution.

Wells has produced a simple, hands-on block model of the Pacific Northwest that illustrates the crustral plate movements.

During his talk, Wells will demonstrate the model, which has now been distributed and is used in 165 classrooms around the region.

This one-hour lecture, sponsored by the Quimper Geology Group, is free and open to the public.

Donations will be accepted to defray expenses.
