Port Ludlow Arts League to host artist reception

PORT LUDLOW — The Port Ludlow Art League will host a reception for Artist of the Month Steve Deligan and Jeweler of the Month Jolie Maki from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today. The reception will begin in the lobby at Sound Community Bank, 9500 Oak Bay Road, at 4 p.m., then move to the league’s adjacent gallery at 5 p.m.

Deligan is exhibiting photographs of the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii. The images are in both color and black and white, and in normal-exposures and long-exposures.

Deligan began film photography 30 years ago and finds it to be a way to help center himself regardless of what the world tosses at us. Today, his photography is fully digital, a press release said.

Deligan explains his process as, “I try to focus on the essence of what I see in front of me and make the image as minimal as possible in order to create a feeling that what you are seeing is exactly how it is supposed to be. The ideal, yet still raw.”

Maki earned a bachelor’s of fine arts in metal arts from the University of Washington. Her work incorporates traditional metal making techniques using gold, silver, copper and bronze to create intricate one-of-kind jewelry pieces. Her recent work explores the use of color using torch-fired enamels and interesting shapes to create jewelry that echoes narratives and symbols inspired by nature, according to a press release. She says she draws inspiration from the cultural symbolism those shapes represent.
